NETWORKING FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

DOI: 10.4324/9781003026549-6

Introduction

The history of humanity has been characterised by transformation and change, often driven by industrial and technological development, but just as often resulting from social movements driven by cultural and philosophical considerations. These latter considerations, which might find an origin through a counterculture of resistance to the dominant ideas of the time, may be articulated and made visible through art, literature or critical debate. In time, as they find their way into mainstream thinking, they influence all aspects of society until they become the dominant ideology, which is itself undermined by the next big wave of ideas.
