Locus and Equation to a Locus

12.1  LOCUS

The path traced out by a point which moves according to specified condition or conditions is called the locus of that point. For examples:

  1. The locus of the point which moves at a constant distance from a fixed point is a circle.
  2. The locus of the point which moves at an equal distance from two fixed points is the perpendicular bisector of the line joining the two points.
12.2  EQUATION TO A LOCUS

When a point P(x, y) moves according to a specified condition or conditions, an algebraic relation between the coordinates x and y of that point can be found.
