Introduction

We have taken the first two steps in establishing a program for business intelligence (BI): defining what BI is, and determining the value it can provide. Yet despite the promise of taking advantage of actionable knowledge, many BI programs do not succeed in delivering on the promise. Whether you and others in your organization are exposed to BI through popular technical media outlets, hardware and software vendors, internal developers, your organization’s system integrators, or external consultants, the promise of BI is often presented as a black box full of incredible technology that cranks out profits by the cartload.
