Using SharePoint Site Templates
When you created a new site by using the configuration wizard in the previous section, the WSS team site template was used as the basis for all content. In looking at the default.aspx page, you can get a good sense of what specific problem the site template is trying to solve.
This site is a team site, which was developed by the SharePoint platform team as a solution for ad hoc teams that need to keep track of upcoming events, documents, announcements, and links. Partly because this is the default template, the team site is probably the most popular site template used on SharePoint; that is not the only reason, however.
