Wrap-up

In this chapter, you built the two basic types of Alexa skills: the newsfeed and the custom skill. While these two skills work together, there’s no reason you can’t build standalone skills whenever you want.

This chapter, in particular, reinforces a fundamental truth of voice assistants: you as a programmer can usually delegate the text-to-speech input and voice recognition to other software and focus on delivering simple text-first interactions for multiple platforms. You’re now ready to build your own home voice assistant integrations for Alexa or other toolkits like Siri or Google Home. If you’d like, there’s an Alexa marketplace where you can publish your skills to a broad audience and even charge for their use.
