Early psychologist William James thought this was an important question, but during the behaviourist years psychology largely ignored fuzzy concepts like happiness. When emotion became a respectable area of study, psychologists tended to look at human suffering instead. Perhaps surprisingly, human happiness has only become a big topic in psychology in the last 15 years or so.
