Stress is cumulative, and if it is building at a rate faster than your body and mind can deal with it then eventually you will reach a point of meltdown and start to experience anxiety symptoms. Repeated low-level stressors such as squabbling children or too much noise and stimulation can have as much long-term impact as a more immediately stressful event like a road accident or losing your job.
