Advances in metabolic engineering of yeasts

Abstract

As the basis of a discussion of strategies for improving yeast strain performance, the concepts of metabolic engineering are defined. Arguments are provided suggesting that, although the ability to characterise and manipulate the yeast genome is necessary, this must be backed up by an intimate knowledge of processes at the cellular level and the ways in which these are regulated from the genome through transcription to the metabolome.
