16. Relativity

 

In the last chapter we discussed the various models of the universe and saw how most of them are based, in one way or another, upon Einstein's restricted and general theories of relativity. To complete our discussion of the universe, therefore, we must finally consider in some detail the two theories of relativity and particularly how they have been applied to cosmology.

Astronomy, and indeed almost all branches of science, have progressed on two broad fronts; first there comes the discovery of new facts, and then the discovery of formulations or systems to account for the facts already known.
