On January 9, 1915, a serious young Indian lawyer arrived in Bombay on a ship from South Africa. He was given a hero’s welcome. His satyagraha (Sanskrit for “truth and firmness”) movement in South Africa had attracted several thousand followers and brought him fame in India.
