What You Can Learn from Start-Ups and Online Firms
Much of the earliest big data activity was in firms with online products and services—Google, eBay, Yahoo!, Facebook, LinkedIn, and the other usual suspects—and start-ups in online and related sectors. We owe these organizations a considerable debt because they established the function of data science and other disciplines of big data. In this chapter, I’ll reflect on the many lessons we can learn from these early adopters. Not all of them may be useful in, for example, a large bank, but they should at least be considered.
