It was perhaps fifteen years ago that my father first posed the question, “When are you going to write a book?” Of course, this was code for, “When are you going to write something for an audience other than academics—for real people?” What followed was my lecture on the trickle-down flow of knowledge from academics to “real people,” followed by an active discussion on the pace of that trickle. I suspect, however, that without my father’s prod, the ideas in this book would still remain scattered across academic manuscripts. In more recent years, his question simply turned to, “How’s the book?” Both of my parents instilled in me a desire to ask and pursue important and interesting questions, for which I am tremendously grateful. ...
