Appendix A. Installing SharePoint Foundation 2010

In this appendix, you learn how to prepare and install SharePoint Foundation 2010, both with the Microsoft SQL Server Express that comes embedded with SharePoint Foundation, and using a full Microsoft SQL Server — in other words, both types of available database configurations. You also learn how to prepare for the installation and understand how SharePoint Foundation uses service accounts. After the installation is done, you learn how to check that everything is okay. You also learn basic troubleshooting techniques when the installation fails.

Note

SharePoint Foundation may be installed in either an Active Directory domain or a workgroup environment (for example, a stand-alone server). The instructions in this chapter describe how to use an Active Directory domain.

This appendix is organized by initial sections describing what you are about to do and why, then a step-by-step description on how to do it, and finally some more information on the steps involved, including any tips and tricks based on real-world scenarios. Appendix B offers more details about advanced configurations.

WHAT IS NEW IN THE ARCHITECTURE

SharePoint Foundation and its predecessor, WSS 3.0, share a lot of their architectural structure, but SharePoint Foundation also has several new features, which are important for the SharePoint administrator to understand.
