Today there are a great number of excellent tools for creating both vector- and raster-based graphics. Choices for selecting the right tool for you depend on your budget, operating system, and requirements for creating your graphics.
- Acorn: Acorn is a popular graphics editor for OS X. It has many advanced features for manipulating graphics and a relatively intuitive user interface. Acorn also allows you to do some simple vector graphics, work with PSD (Adobe Photoshop files), and has a nice set of filters for adding components to raster images (e.g., shadows, bevels, etc.). At $49, Acorn comes with support and is significantly less expensive than Adobe Photoshop. You can download a trial of the software at
