Gu Kaizhi was born in Wuxi, China. He came from a bureaucratic family, meaning his father and relatives worked for the government. When he was younger, Gu Kaizhi was a royal officer to the emperor of China. But he had a lot of talents and is known as a poet, writer, and painter.
A LASTING LEGACY
Gu Kaizhi is considered the most famous painter of the Eastern Jin dynasty and a founder of traditional Chinese painting. He painted pictures and stories on long sheets of silk or paper attached to wooden rollers. These are also known as handscrolls.
