Computers are routinely used for creating and manipulating text. This is probably the one application that most people use. The software that carries out such tasks has evolved over the years.
The first application of this type was text editing. The text editor was a (relatively) simple program that allowed the user to input text and subsequently make changes to it. There were usually facilities for searching the text, and for printing it out, but the first text editors were very limited in function.
