Unless yours is a small organisation where reporters are expected to be ‘self-starters’ providing all their own ideas, your first responsibility as a newcomer will be to that part of the operation dealing with news gathering. Intake/ input/the assignments desk/news desk decides which events are worthy of coverage and assigns staff to cover them. The ‘desk’ controls your reporting life on behalf of the news editor, who is also likely to give you experience of intake work by assigning you to act as a stand-in occasionally.
