Tables and graphical representations give a general description of data. However, it is often useful and convenient to find representative values for the location of the center of the distribution, and other numbers to give a measure of the deviation from this central value. In this way, we can obtain a numerical description of the data. We now discuss the values commonly used to measure the location of the center of the distribution. These are referred to as measures of central tendency.
