The adoption of CAVs will follow the classic stages of any other product or service and CAVs will need a number of years to penetrate the market. Accelerating this process, whether because of initial public diffidence or technical features to be perfected, may confine the use of CAVs to environments that offer specific characteristics in terms of predictability. This would limit risks and disruption, thus enhancing safety and performance. Spatial segregation from other modes of transport on city streets and the associated profoundly negative effect on city vitality would only be one step away from this, and represents a tempting quick fix with a difficult legacy.
