13Tracking Other Instrumentation
We have covered some of the fundamental instruments that you will find in many recordings, particularly for my specialism of rock genres, but there are also many other instruments that could feature in popular music. Although you will tailor your approach to capture the nuances of each instrument, you will, once again, see that the tracking mindset is the same: envisage how you want the instrument to sound, and achieve it as early in the recording chain as possible.
Many of the instruments discussed here are acoustic instruments, so don’t forget: optimal placement of the instrument in the acoustic environment and the position of the microphone are more important than the choice of microphone or pre-amp.
