The compact disc and digital audio
The only contact most users of audio equipment will have with digital signal processing (DSP) techniques is likely to be when they play a compact disc – the ubiquitous ‘CD’ – though there are a number of other ‘digital’ procedures in widespread use, such as in the transmission and decoding of FM stereo broadcasts, quite apart from the manufacture of CDs and other recordings, and it is probable that even more will be introduced in the next few years.
However, this is a very large field, which could not be covered adequately in a single chapter, so I propose to consider in detail only those techniques used in the initial encoding and subsequent replay of CDs, on the grounds that the basic electronic techniques ...
