The Value of the ASTD Competency Model

Since the 2004 publication of ASTD’s Competency Study, training and development practitioners have weathered a tsunami of change that has forever altered the context and nature of their role and challenged fundamental assumptions about professional practice.

As a result, these practitioners must now demonstrate their organizational value and relevancy more than ever by engaging with a host of rapidly advancing technological capabilities (particularly digital, mobile, and social technology). At the same time, these professionals must adapt to once-in-a-generation economic conditions while coping with shifting cultural and social expectations on an unprecedented global scale.
