Since the publication of the first edition a dozen years ago, and the second about six years ago, the use of this book has been gradually extended from industry to academia.
Specifically, the first part of the book has been used to teach calculus of variations for undergraduate mathematics students. Furthermore, the second part has been used for mathematical modeling classes for applied mathematics and engineering students.
To accommodate that change of focus and to respond to some requests from students and teachers, this edition brings extensions to numerous sections of both parts. Detailed explanations, illustrative examples, and exercises were added to every chapter of the first part.
