Anti-work is introduced, including its basic premises. It is rather touching to look back on the disappointment of the first discoverers of short written passages on bits of papyrus or clay. It often turned out that the texts which the early archeologists laboriously reconstructed were basically those of an accounting scribe working in a palace or for a merchant, and referring to transactions or items of merely quotidian nature – jugs of wine, sheep, cattle, tax rolls. Of course, it seems only natural that these accounts must have been created in great abundance, being reflections of the working world as it existed then.
