Thermal spray nanostructured ceramic and metal-matrix composite coatings

Nanostructured coatings offer a number of attractive properties and attributes that have generated considerable interest for both military and industrial applications. In particular, results showing improved wear resistance and toughness over conventional coatings are reported. These improvements are the result of several mechanisms, including refinement of the grain size for metals and their composites, and the presence of nanopores for ceramics.
