This chapter is about medicines or formulated drugs. To make a medicine of a particular dosage form the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is mixed with non-APIs called excipients (Figure 5.1). The excipients play a very important role in formulating different dosage forms. This chapter explains why various types of dosage forms are required and how tablets, capsules, or solutions and suspension are manufactured. Though the process of manufacturing tablets and solutions has existed for many years it still evolves as new methods to enhance the safety, quality, and efficacy of medicines are found.
