In the case of art and alternative processes, substrate is the term that applies to any material that is used as a printing surface or foundation for receiving art. It is the media you use to print to, paint to, or use as a base. Paper, canvas, wood, metal, stone, tile, and many others are all examples of substrates.
If you can learn to be resourceful, you can save a lot of money on your materials and also stand out a little bit due to aesthetic differences.
