When I go to an industry networking event or informal social gathering, I often get asked about what I do for a living, as I’m sure many of us are. When I tell people that I help companies improve their diversity and inclusion, I usually get the follow-up question of, “What is that about?” So it’s worth starting off with the basics of what we mean when we talk about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, why it’s important, and how to diagnose where your issues are. We’ll dive into each of these areas in this chapter.
