DO-254 development takes place within the context of ARP4754 processes. The certification aspects of airborne electronic hardware are encapsulated by the development of the system in which the electronic hardware is used. Similarly, the system development is performed within the context of a certification program for an aircraft, a modification or update to an aircraft, or in the case of a technical standard order (TSO), the TSO approval process.
Figure 3.1 shows the airborne electronic hardware within a system and the system within the aircraft program concept.
