Three-dimensional textiles in the aerospace industry
A. Prichard Prichard Consulting LLC, USA
Abstract
Since its very inception, the success and advancement of aviation, and to a certain extent the advancement of the textile industry, have been inextricably entwined. Though in the last few decades this has been less obvious, the introduction of carbon fiber, essentially a textile product, has created a need for these two industries to cooperate again. This chapter follows the history of the textile industry involvement with aviation, its uses in the past and present, and touches on the new opportunities presenting themselves today.
