8.1 Introduction to Performance and Efficiency
Performance refers to the performance of users, systems, or environments. Efficiency might describe performance but also considers the costs for programming, user and system processing, acquisition and maintenance costs for hardware and software, compliance and security requirements, sustainability, documentation, ecological energy efficiency (“Green IT,” see Schendera, 2020/2007, Chapter 13), and the like. It is fair to say that performance and efficiency are not easy to quantify. There is no single definition that applies to every context.
