Leaf area index

Abstract

Leaf area index (LAI) indicates the amount of leaf area in an ecosystem. LAI is a critical parameter for understanding terrestrial ecological, hydrological, and biogeochemical processes. This chapter first introduces field methods for measuring LAI, including direct and indirect methods, which can be divided into contact methods and noncontact optical methods. LAI can be estimated from remote sensing data using either statistical or physical methods. The statistical methods use the empirical relationship between the LAI and surface reflectance or vegetation indices.
