Preface

The human visual system (HVS) has not changed much in the last 40,000 years. Imaging techniques, on the other hand, have changed dramatically in just the last 5 years, since the first edition of this book appeared. While the HVS is able to see up to 20 f-stops of lighting in a scene with minimal eye adaption, and from starlight through to bright sunshine with full adaption, traditional imaging (or low dynamic range [LDR] aka standard dynamic range [SDR]) techniques are only capable of capturing 8 stops. This is now rapidly changing. As Figure 1 shows, high dynamic range (HDR) is providing a step change in imaging with its capablity of capturing and displaying detail in the very brightest and very darkest parts of a scene simultaneously. ...
