Optical Receivers and Transmission Performance Fundamentals

Signals and noise are important parameters to determine the quality of any engineering system, especially in the telecommunications field. The modulated signals under different modulation formats will be treated in subsequent chapters. This chapter presents an overview of the noise process and mechanism in terms of equivalent noise power and contribution to the optoelectronic process at the optical receiver.
