9.4 Object-Relational Databases
Given the wide-spread use of relational database management systems on the one hand and the predominance of object-oriented programming languages on the other hand, most RDBMSs now include some object-oriented functionality. At the heart of this, the SQL standard also includes some object-oriented extensions; the basic unit of storage however is still a tuple inside a relation. RDBMSs supporting (part of) the object-oriented extensions of the SQL standard have been termed object-relational database management systems (ORDBMSs).
