14 Bone Orientations

In rigging, the term “orientation” is used to describe the rest pose rotation of bones. It is important to orient bones in such a way that axes align with directions that make the most sense for animation and rigging. For example, we orient a lower arm bone in such a way that one of its axes is perpendicular to the elbow, which will, in effect, make this bone and the arm bend in a natural-looking motion when rotated on that axis (See Figure 14.1). Carefully thought-out orientations are important for both rigging and animation.
