In chapter 8, I talked about the obsession with “the numbers” that exploded in the 1960s, when the new “science” of decision theory crossed paths with low-cost computer power. At that moment, business scholars began the stampede toward a new “law”: given enough numbers, anyone can run anything.
Quickly, business became more about math than about the understanding of emotion, behavior, and relationships in commerce. It became more about logic than about judgment.
