16.1 Introduction
5G-Advanced refers to the 5G evolution defined in 3GPP Releases 18 and beyond. 5G-Advanced brings many enhancements to 5G radio, boosting its capabilities towards the 6G era beyond 2030. The first part of 5G-Advanced specifications with Release 18 will be completed in 3GPP during the first half of 2024 and is expected to be available commercially during 2025, followed by Release 19, planned to be ready at the end of 2025, with market availability likely in the 2027 timeframe.
5G-Advanced targets utilizing 5G mobile networks for a number of other use cases beyond mobile broadband and ultra-reliable communications. Metaverse future requires extended reality (XR) support, which is one of the 5G-Advanced capabilities. Other focus areas include uplink improvements, mobility enhancements, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, super-accurate positioning and timing, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) utilization and energy efficiency.
