So, how does all of this work? How do you go from an idea in your head to a 3D printed object ready for an audience?

One of the trickiest concepts for 3D printing beginners is that it requires learning both the hardware and the software. Think of it like printing a document on your standard 2D ink-jet printer. Not only do you need to know how to use the printer itself, but also the software to compose the original document (like Microsoft Word, for example).

You may scoff at the idea of having to know how to use a 2D printer (it just needs to be plugged in and turned on, right?!), but ...
