Exporting Your File
Once your designed model is complete, it is time to export to STL. Often this is as simple as “File” then “Export To” in the menu commands. In some software programs this may be called an .stl or STL file. In others, it may be called a Stereolithography, Stereo Lithography, or a 3D file. Some software packages simply include a button or menu command that says “3D Print.”
STL is the primary file type for consumer-level 3D printing, although it does not carry any color information. Other file types may also be used, such as .obj (Object file) or .vrml (Virtual Reality Modeling Language, pronounced “vermal”), which have the ability to retain all color and surface mapping information.
