Rick Smolan (b. 1949) was 23 years old when he began photographing professionally. At 24, he did his first cover assignment for Time magazine, and spent the next 10 years photographing for National Geographic, Time, LIFE, Newsweek, and other publications. In 1975, he helped form Contact Press, a photo agency consisting of other well-known and respected photojournalists. The agency was formed in such a way that photographers could have their own personal projects to work on, when time and money permitted.
