"Oracle Application Server 10g Essentials": Exploring the Full Range of Oracle Application Server's Abilities
Sebastopol, CA--The new Oracle Application Server is a middle-tier
application platform suite that offers a wide range of functionality,
including Java runtime and development tools, portal development tools,
business intelligence, single sign-on identify management, and much more.
It's so powerful and complex, in fact, that many people who use the
product are familiar with only a portion of the entire range of its
capabilities. The choices can overwhelm, and few people grasp how the
larger issues--such as the interplay between components or the various
architectural choices in the product--play out in the Oracle Application
Server.
"Oracle's Application Server is quite diverse in its capabilities,"
explains Robert Stackowiak, coauthor of Oracle Application Server 10g
Essentials (O'Reilly, US $34.95) along with Rick Greenwald and Donald
Bales. "Often, its capabilities are not fully understood or known. For
example, some who use the Application Server as a Java middle-tier
solution for deployment may not realize that the Application Server can
also provide a business intelligence solution for ad-hoc query and
reporting."
"Oracle Application Server is steadily gaining market share," adds
coauthor Donald Bales, "and a book like this, which explains in
straightforward language how the server works--including its benefits and
capabilities--will be invaluable to anyone who needs to make a decision on
which server to choose."
The book distills an enormous amount of information about the product and
its components into a compact, easy-to-read volume filled with focused
text, illustrations, and helpful hints. The authors note that it will
appeal to everyone from technology implementation specialists to IT
managers. As Stackowiak explains, "The book's intended audience includes
those who are evaluating application servers as well as those who have
already chosen the Oracle Application Server but want to understand
everything it is capable of."
More comprehensible than a large reference and more detailed than a
primer, Oracle Application Server 10g Essentials provides a foundation
for understanding and using Oracle Application Server effectively and
efficiently. Readers concentrate on the most important issues and
components of the server, focusing primarily on principles rather than
syntax.
Divided into three concise sections, the book covers server basics, core
components, and server functionality. The book opens with the history of
Oracle Application Server, its architecture, management, standards, and
third-party support for languages and tools such as Java, Perl, and HTTP.
The next section covers Oracle's web server, containers for Java web
caching, and the server's security features. Finally, the book discusses
HTML development, Java development, and Oracle development. Although the
book refers mainly to Oracle Application Server 10g, the authors also
describe features in earlier product releases where necessary,
particularly Oracle9i Application Server.
Regardless of which of the server's capabilities readers use, they will
benefit from this tightly focused, all-in-one technical overview. It's
written for anyone who is concerned with using and managing web servers,
whether they are involved with Java development and deployment; develop
for Oracle Portal; or use and administer business intelligence, mobile, or
integration software.
"I'm delighted with the work that Rick Greenwald, Robert Stackowiak, and
Donald Bales have done in putting together the first comprehensive
overview of Oracle Application Server 10g and its various components,"
states Thomas Kurians, senior vice president of Oracle Server
Technologies, Oracle Corporation. "Based on the authors' own wide
experience with the product, every reader--whether beginner or
expert--will find that this book provides them with an invaluable
framework for understanding how to use the product most effectively."
