Should allow more choices (such as djbdns). Choosing "Other" seems like a wasted vote.

DJBdns is the only DNS server I will ever run. -

This Poll is totally rigged! Other still hasn't changed, even after I cast my vote for djbDNS.

See below as to why the numbers were getting screwy, it wasn't5 rigged. And djbdns was not on there out of my ignorace, not through some animosity towards the server. Jeez.

I use djbdns, it does what it said. But BIND is good to be use by others, for bugs&cache poisoning ...

There is security hole in the dns poll part of your home page; here is a quick and dirty workaround
sed 's/Other/djbdns/' < index.html > tmp
mv tmp index.html

This poll is fixed

Three more positive posts since the '9 votes' and it still says 9 votes despite a reload.
You guys should have worked for Enron !!!

BIND is an abortion. Slow, Takes forever to load, lousy format, did I say slow yet.
I'll take secure, small and fast, that's djbDNS, anytime.
Cache poisioning anyone...

Tinydns + dnscache
2004-01-23 19:56:43 sdbsdb [Reply | View]
We use tinydns (djbdns) for publishing our addresses, and dnscache for local name resolution on our LAN. It's a wonderful combination.

Perhaps the poll is broken. It said 9 for Other before and after I voted and I just voted for Other so it should be at least 1 more...

How do I do DNS ?

Why, I use djbdns, of course. You mean there are alternatives ? Hmmm... do you mean there are GOOD alternatives ? No ? That's what I thought.

this is absurd. nothing quite stinks up one's reputation than a stacked poll.
show a little backbone, o'reilly. djbdns isn't 'other'.

It had an improper close date set on the poll, this was my fault...but you can't seriously be thinking that we fixed a poll....that's just dumb.
That said...thanks for the heads up on djbdns, I'll check it out. I should point out that once a poll is on the site, it isn't really right to add or subtract options, I'll just run the poll again in 6 monhts or so with the other option added to it.

Hello,
please take also the following into account:
- ldapdns (LDAP based DNS server software)
- NSD (by RIPE)
FWIW, I'm also using djbdns in my ISP. -

i'd suggest shutting down the poll and restarting. the results are invalid/worthless based upon the improper close date, so it's "just dumb" to continue running the poll, wouldn't you agree?
and there are many other DNS servers besides the one we're all posting about, and the ones that are in the poll. i realize it's an informal poll, but one really should do some minimal homework before generating one for a highly technical audience. IMNSHO, of course!

my intemperate initial comments aside, i should point out that i've been been running nameservers professionally since 1994. I ran Buggy Internet Name Daemon until 2001, then switched to djbdns.
You couldn't pay me to go back.

I have to agree. I run a server which, at the time, had 3000 domains on it. I used bind but every time I made a change to the data it would take bind many seconds to reload the zones. I eventually learned how to reload individual zones and this helped but it didn't always work right.
After switching to djbdns things worked like a dream. Performance was better, maintenance easier and the dns automation scripts I'd cobbled together to maintain the bind zones were a breeze to convert to tinydns format.
Now, years later, I've got more than 6000 active domains and everything is still running smooth as butter. Never had to upgrade because of a bug (security or otherwise). It just works. And works good.

tinydns may look weird at first, but after a while you'll realise that it's exactly how DNS should be done, not some failed undergrad project like BIND.

Why no djbdns option?
2004-01-18 06:03:06 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
Tinydns is clearly the best way of doing dns, why does O'reilly concentrate so much on bind when it's so bad? O'reilly's market would be well-served by a djbdns book, and for that matter a qmail book.
