In most cases the NumLock of your keyboard is not activated when you login to a Xsession. So you have to push the Num-Key of your Keyboard if you want to use the NumKeys. Simple solution: Just install numlockx. After installing this software, everytime you login to a Xsession the NumLock will be activated automatically.
