  If you have physical access to the linux system you can get in to the system without knowing any password by typing "lilo single" on lilo prompt.
  
  After entering in to the system you can change the root password without knowing the older one.

  solution:
  
  add to lilo.conf:
  restricted
  password=<password>
  
  and chmod 600 /etc/lilo.conf
  
  wen do linux 1 again lilo is going to ask for that password.

  Only if you havn't bothered to disallow it, run bastille security tool and it will fix that for you.
