However, programmers new to the platform may find themselves overwhelmed by the mass of options, dialogs and executables. Preston Gralla has been writing books and articles for O'Reilly for quite a few years now. He has published a lot of Windows-related pieces, with Windows XP Hacks dating back as early as 2003. So, O'Reilly's Hacks series has a long tradition, too. Its goal has always been exploring things in a different fashion, providing views from a not so obvious angle. How does Windows 8 Hacks live up to these great expectations? Full Review >

Since the first appearance of the iPad, the end of PCs as we know it has been proclaimed countless times. While it is true that sales have dropped significantly, tablets still fail to deliver in areas where PCs shine (and always have). I boldly believe that nobody will ever want to do serious publishing, layouting, drawing (CAD) or developing on tablets. On the other hand, PCs have failed to compete with the pleasant and lightweight user experience of tablets, especially the iPad. So Microsoft faced the task of reimagining a desktop operating system and inventing a tablet ecosystem. With the release of Windows 8 and associated new hardware this hybrid system has become reality. Full Review >

Technical writers, bloggers and podcasters want to share information. To reach their audience, they need to express their thoughts in a way that is both consistent and a pleasure to read or to listen to. Of course, the information being presented must be valid, correct and true. Beyond that, the message must be presented well: authors have to choose the right tone and use the right vocabulary. At a more advanced level, certain sentence structures, words and phrases should be avoided. Full Review >

There are countless titles on writing an iPhone or iPad app. As for the apps themselves it becomes increasingly difficult for book authors to distinguish himself from others, to make the textbook unique and a worthwhile read. The Stories Behind Elegant Data Solutions

Thomas's rating: StarStarStarStarStar 4.0

We live in a world of data. By walking across the street humans receive and process countless bits of information. What seems so easy for us, would be very hard work for machines. Beautiful Data by Toby Segaran and Jeff Hammerbacher tells 20 storys about how fascinating, thrilling and inspiring working with data can be. Compilations of work by different writers usually offer much more insight into a topic than a piece written by a single person. Each author adds - by chance or willingly - his personal background, his attitude towards the matter, his personal experience. Still, different writing skills may result in a unsteady reading experience. In Beautiful Data, very experienced data practitioners explain how they developed simple and elegant solutions on projects ranging from the Mars lander to a Radiohead video. Though the scientific parts of each of the papers are undoubtedly excellent, I found myself having a hard time appreciating the narrative facets of some of them. As this is a very personal perception, I will not reveal which they are. You will have to find out for yourself. Nonetheless this book is absolutely worth reading. Full Review >
