Jian Chang

Bio

Dr. Jian Chang is a data science expert and software system architect with expertise in machine-learning and big-data systems. He has rich experiences of leading innovation projects and R&D activities to promote data science best practice within large organizations. With deep domain knowledge on various vertical use cases (e.g., Finance, Telco, Healthcare), he is currently working pushing the cutting-edge application of AI at the intersection of high-performance database and IoT, focusing on unleashing the value of spatial-temporal data.

Previously, Dr. Chang conducted data science researches that cover many operational aspects of the OpenX Real-Time Bidding Ad Exchange, such as auction mechanism, reserve price optimization, and universal competition. Designed and implemented dynamic market pricing mechanism based on deep-learning neural networks and ensemble modeling approaches that generates 30% more price protection and revenue lift for customers. He also designed highly effective and scalable models to detect fraudulent (i.e., non-human) Web traffic. Designed and implemented a real-time traffic quality system with milliseconds response time to protect the integrity of the OpenX Ad Exchange. Everyday, the traffic quality system analyzed over 500M+ user history behavior patterns and 10B+ ad transactions to maintain a healthy and prosperous advertising ecosystem. The effectiveness of the system is the state-of-the-art in the industry, ranking #1 of Inventory Quality in the highly reputable Pixalate's Global Seller Trust Index, more effective than Google and many other competitors' anti-fraud system, and received coverage and highlights from various influential industrial media.

Dr. Chang received his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS), University of Pennsylvania, under the advisory of Professor Insup Lee (ACM Fellow, IEEE Fellow). He has published and presented research paper and posters at many top-tier conferences and journals, including: ACM Computing Surveys, ACSAC, CEAS, EuroSec, FGCS, HiCoNS, HSCC, IEEE Systems Journal, MASHUPS, PST, SSS, TRUST, and WiVeC. HE also served as reviewers for many highly reputable international journals and conferences. Dr. Chang is also a frequent speaker at various technology conferences, including: O'Reilly Strata AI Conference, NVidia GPU Technology Conference, Hadoop Summit, DataWorks Summit, Amazon AWS re:Invent, Global Big Data Conference, Global AI Conference, World IoT Expo, Intel Partner Summit, presenting keynote talks and sharing technology leadership thoughts.
