Subject: Linux Desktop Office Suites

Tim,

As LINUX is sweeping the server field, I see LINUX desktop computing lagging behind. Quality desktop applications will always drive the OS on the desktop. StarOffice & ApplixWare are QUALITY office suite products being ignored by the mainstream computing press.

Any plans for books regarding StarOffice and/or ApplixWare we could use to train users on these office suites using LINUX as the desktop OS?

Thanks in Advance.

Matt

Matt,

We don't have any plans for StarOffice or ApplixWare books. We aren't really big on application books. System administration and programming are more our forte. Most application books are pretty boring--tutorials spelling out the basics! The kind of people we write for don't need books for the kind of information that is in most application books. (It's all the obvious stuff!) We like books about things that are hard to figure out.

I imagine that we'll eventually get to StarOffice in a Nutshell, though. In that concentrated reference format, we can boil down enough detail to make a meaty application book. Any StarOffice or ApplixWare experts out there who want to give it a try?

In any event, I think that with the flood of interest in Linux, you'll soon be seeing lots of books on these topics from other publishers.
