SEBASTOPOL, Calif. -- Oncology nurses will be able to download
for free over 35 detailed "Click-Print" patient fact sheets on a
new Web site debuting this week,
Onconurse.com.
Developed by the
editors of Patient-Centered Guides, the premier publisher of
advocate-generated, post-diagnosis content, each fact sheet
combines practical, emotional, and MD-reviewed medical
information that nurses can hand out to patients at diagnosis and
during different stages of treatment.
At its launch, Onconurse.com has fact sheets covering the
following forms of cancer: advanced breast cancer; colon and
rectal cancer; leukemia; lung cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas;
and pediatric cancers. In addition, the site has free fact
sheets available for download covering such general information
topics as "Clinical Trial Resources," "Solving Problems With Your
Doctor," "Dealing With Managed Care," and "Support From Family
and Friends."
"This site came about as a result of feedback at the past two
Oncology Nursing Society conferences," said Patient-Centered
Guides' managing editor Linda Lamb. "We learned that a growing
number of nurses now have access to the Internet and to a copier,
but few have money to spend on patient education. We decided to
make these materials available online for nurses to print and
copy for patients, as needed."
To download fact sheets, nurses go to www.onconurse.com, click on
the fact sheet they wish to download, select the file format they
desire (PDF or print from the Web in HTML), and then print it on
their local printer. The site is designed so that this task can
be accomplished in a minute or less, thus enhancing the nurses'
abilities to serve their patients without disrupting their work
flow.
"We ask that nurses register online first so that we can alert
them via email when we have populated the site with new fact
sheets," said Lamb. "We are totally self-supported, so they
needn't worry about being hit with unsolicited email or
advertising. Onconurse.com is a free service of
Patient-Centered Guides."
In the coming months the editors of Patient-Centered Guides will
be adding new fact sheets and other content to Onconurse.com.
"Our goal is to create a resource center on the Web that oncology
nurses can turn to easily to enhance their ability to serve their
patients," said Lamb.
"Along with oncology nurses, we believe that patient education
is part of healing. We're trying to help fill some of the
information and system voids that make keeping up with patient
needs difficult."
