Spectrum Disorders: Finding a Diagnosis and Getting Help by

educate and should not be used as an alternative for professional
medical care.
The establishments and practitioners in this list have
been compiled from a variety of sources, including parent
recommendations, ASD support groups, and official government
documents on health care. We do not imply endorsement of their
medical or therapeutic approaches by including them here.
These facilities and organizations conduct or fund research into
autistic spectrum disorders. They are generally not sources of
ongoing medical care, but their web sites, publications, and
staff may inform you about new developments.
There are, of course, many individual physicians and clinics with
expertise. A local autism advocacy and support organization is
usually the best source of information about where to go for both
evaluation and ongoing care. Another good place to start is a
nearby university that has a medical school.

As discussed in Autistic Spectrum Disorders by Mitzi
Waltz (Chapter 5, "Medical Interventions," and Chapter 7,
"Other Interventions"), some researchers suspect that allergies,
food sensitivities, metabolic disorders, Candida yeast
overgrowth, viral infection, unusual reactions to immunizations,
and other factors may be involved. Ferreting out these causes
usually requires obtaining test results on blood, urine, or stool
samples. Your physician may be able to do these tests. If not,
the facilities listed next, along with the Autism Research Unit
listed earlier, can help. Most labs work directly with doctors,
not parents or patients.
Make sure you have expert medical help in interpreting test
results. The reports you receive may be unintentionally
misleading if you don't know what you're looking at. If the
results seem inconsistent or strange, you may want to duplicate
the tests at another lab. Labs do make mistakes.
It's a good idea to speak to recent clients of a lab you are
considering. Labs sometimes change management or test
procedures--for better or for worse.
